Folks — Happy Columbus Day.
Yes. I said it. COLUMBUS Day. Not “Indigenous Peoples’ Day.” Not “Exploration Day.” Not “A Day of Reflection on Colonial Harms.” The second Monday in October belongs to the man who opened the door to the greatest nation in the history of the world — and I will not apologize for saying his name out loud.
Every year the left drags him into the public square for a show trial. Tear down the statue. Rename the holiday. Teach the children that 1492 was the year evil arrived.
And every year they miss the story. Because they were never looking for it.
So take out a pencil, Class. Here is the BEST of the story.
THE BONES TALKED
Two years ago, on Columbus Day 2024, a forensic team out of the University of Granada in Spain went on Spanish national television with the result of a twenty-two-year investigation. Professor José Antonio Lorente had worked the bones buried in the Cathedral of Seville — the bones of the Admiral, his son Hernando, and his brother Diego.
His verdict: the remains are Columbus. And the family DNA points to a Sephardic Jew.
Write it down. SEPHARDIC. It comes from Sefarad — the Hebrew name for Spain.
Now — the textbook says Genoa. An Italian wool-weaver’s boy. And for five hundred years the textbook has had a problem it could never explain. Why did this “Italian” never write in Italian? Why did he write in Castilian, even in his private notes to his own brother? Why did he guard his origins like a man with something to hide?
Because in the Spain of 1492, a man with Jewish blood DID have something to hide. The Inquisition was burning people for less.
And here is where it gets interesting.
Turn to the very first page of the Admiral’s own logbook — the prologue he addressed to Ferdinand and Isabella. He reminds the King and Queen that in the very same season they drove the Jews out of their kingdoms, they commissioned HIM to sail.
He put the two events side by side. In his own hand. On page one.
The expulsion deadline ran out at the end of July 1492. The harbors of Spain were crowded with Jewish families being shipped out of the only home they had known for a thousand years. And on August 3, 1492 — with the last of them gone — three little ships slipped out of the port of Palos and pointed west.
And who did the Admiral bring along as his interpreter? Luis de Torres — a man born a Jew, baptized just before the voyage, who spoke HEBREW. Columbus expected to meet the Great Khan of Asia, and the language he packed for the occasion was the language of Moses.
Do you see it?
The door of Spain slammed shut on the house of Judah — and in the same breath, a son of that house sailed out to find the door to a new world.
Not Italian blood. ISRAELITE blood.
THE MAP OF TYRE
So how did he know which way to sail?
Columbus did not sail on a hunch. He sailed on a calculation. So let me ask you a question your fourth-grade teacher never thought to ask.
What if I told you that behind the voyage of Columbus stood a geographer from the very city that once supplied the sailors for King Solomon?
The city was TYRE.
The geographer was MARINUS.
And the numbers that sent Columbus west had their roots in his work.
Write it down. TYRE.
Marinus of Tyre was the father of mathematical map-making in the ancient world. Ptolemy himself, the giant of ancient geography, built his work on Marinus’s foundation. And Marinus taught something the other scholars rejected: that Asia stretched so far to the east that the ocean between Europe and Asia must be SHORT.
Now — Columbus did not carry some scroll off Solomon’s dock. Marinus lived under Rome, a thousand years after Hiram. What reached Columbus was Tyre’s IDEA, handed down through Ptolemy and drawn up by a Florentine astronomer named Paolo Toscanelli into a chart with Asia sitting just across the water from Spain. Columbus read it. Columbus believed it. Columbus bet his life on it.
Now open your Bible to First Kings, chapter nine. Because we have just stumbled onto a connection worth investigating.
Tyre was the city of King Hiram — Solomon’s friend and partner. And what did Hiram give Solomon? Not cedar only. SAILORS.
“And Hiram sent in the navy his servants, shipmen that had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon.” — 1 Kings 9:27
“For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish with the navy of Hiram: once in three years came the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.” — 1 Kings 10:22
Israel’s fleets and Tyre’s fleets sailed TOGETHER. Hebrew sailors learned the oceans from the masters of Tyre. Long before that, the sea-tribes of Israel already had salt in their beards — Zebulun was blessed to be “an haven of ships” with his border reaching to Zidon (Genesis 49:13), and Deborah’s song asks why Dan “remained in ships” (Judges 5:17). Israel and the Phoenician coast shared the same waters, the same harbors, and the same ships for centuries.
And where did Solomon’s ships go? To Tarshish and to Ophir — the far-off lands of gold.
Now listen to this. When Columbus landed on the island of Hispaniola and found gold in its rivers, what did he tell people he had found? The Italian historian Peter Martyr — writing in 1500 — reported that the Admiral believed Hispaniola was OPHIR. Solomon’s Ophir.
In his own mind, the Admiral had sailed straight into First Kings.
THE ADMIRAL LEFT A CONFESSION
Now — you don’t have to take Professor Toto’s word for what drove that voyage. The Admiral put it in writing.
Around 1501 — after his third voyage, after Spain had shipped him home in CHAINS — Columbus sat down and compiled a manuscript of Scripture. Historians call it the Book of Prophecies. Page after page of Isaiah, the Psalms, and the prophets: the isles of the sea, the ships of Tarshish, the sons of Zion brought home from far away.
“Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far.” — Isaiah 60:9
And in the letter he wrote to the King and Queen to go with it, he told them plainly where the idea to sail west came from. Not from his own cleverness. He said YAHWEH Himself had opened his understanding — with a hand he could actually FEEL upon him.
Then he wrote the line that belongs on the wall of every history classroom in America. He told the most powerful monarchs on earth that his intelligence, his mathematics, and his maps had done him no good at all. The voyage, he said, was “simply the fulfillment of what Isaiah had prophesied.”
Read that again, Class.
The man who sailed by the numbers of Marinus of Tyre is telling you the NUMBERS didn’t get him there.
Keep that in your pocket. You’re going to need it.
So let me put it on the board in one line:
A son of Judah, sailing by the numbers of a man of Tyre, looking for the Ophir of Solomon — and crediting Isaiah for the landing.
You tell me that’s an accident.
THE WRONG MAP TO THE RIGHT PLACE
And now — the best part of the story. The part the skeptics think is their kill shot.
Marinus’s numbers were WRONG.
Not a little wrong. Badly wrong. Columbus took the smallest globe on the shelf and then shaved it smaller. He figured Japan sat roughly 2,500 nautical miles west of the Canary Islands. The real distance to Asia was MORE THAN TEN THOUSAND. The experts of Portugal laughed him out of the room — and on the math, the experts were right.
If Columbus had known the true size of the ocean between Spain and Asia, he would never have left the dock. No sailor alive would have provisioned three ships for a voyage that long. They’d have starved halfway to China.
But he didn’t know. He sailed on a bad map.
And thirty-three days after leaving the Canaries — almost exactly where the bad map told him to start looking for land — there WAS land. Not Asia. Something no chart in Columbus’s Europe showed at all. Something that had been sitting there, waiting, behind the ocean, the whole time.
Write that in capital letters:
YAHWEH USED A WRONG MAP TO PUT THE RIGHT MAN IN THE RIGHT PLACE.
The scholars were right about the distance to Asia. Columbus was wrong about it. But not one of them had the thing that mattered on his chart — a continent standing in the middle of the ocean.
That is what the Admiral meant when he said the maps didn’t get him there. He was right.
And while we’re clearing the board — throw out the fairy tale they gave you in grade school, that Columbus was the brave fool who proved the world wasn’t flat. Educated Europeans had known the earth was round since the Greeks. That flat-earth myth was mostly popularized by Washington Irving’s romantic biography in 1828. The fight in 1492 was never about the SHAPE of the world. It was about the SIZE of it.
And the man who got the size wrong is the man who found the New World.
THE SHOW TRIAL
Now let’s deal with the prosecution.
The left says Columbus brought genocide. Write the definition down, Class, because words still mean things. Genocide is the deliberate attempt to destroy a people as such — intent is the whole crime. What Hitler did to the Jews was genocide. Planned. Ordered. Industrialized.
The great dying of the native peoples of the Caribbean was real, and it was a horror. And I am not going to hand you a fairy tale about it. Smallpox did not reach the islands until 1518 — and by then the TaĂno of Hispaniola were already nearly gone. Disease killed them. So did the forced labor of the mines and fields, the slave raids, the famine, and the sword. That is the record.
But a labor system that killed — monstrous as it was — is not the same crime as a plan to wipe a people off the face of the earth. The Spanish crown wanted the TaĂno as laborers and converts, not corpses. It even passed the Laws of Burgos in 1512 to restrain the abuse — laws the colonists largely ignored. Cruelty and greed, yes. A deliberate extermination order, no.
Was Columbus a perfect man? No. Write that down too. He was a hard governor. He took captives and shipped them as slaves. And his OWN crown arrested him for misgoverning Hispaniola and sent him home in chains in 1500. Nobody had to wait five hundred years to judge Columbus. Spain did it while he was alive.
So here is my question for the prosecution: does the record of a man’s sins ERASE the record of what he did?
Because that is the trick. The left doesn’t want you to WEIGH Columbus. It wants you to CANCEL him — to believe that a flawed man could not have changed the world, and that because he did wrong, 1492 must be the year evil arrived.
Class, the truth does not need a defense attorney willing to hide the evidence. It needs a jury willing to examine ALL of it. And when you examine all of it, the verdict on 1492 still stands.
But here is the hypocrisy, folks. The modern left judges every man who ever lived by the moral fashions of the last fifty years — and then congratulates itself for being enlightened. Name me the nation in the fifteenth century that condemned slavery. You can’t. The Aztec empire on the other side of that ocean was harvesting human hearts on temple altars by the thousands. The TaĂno’s Carib neighbors were raiding their villages for captives. Slavery was the law of the whole fallen world — Africa, Asia, Arabia, Europe, and the Americas alike.
What will the year 2526 say about you and me? Maybe they’ll call us barbarians for eating chicken. Maybe they’ll tear down OUR statues. A generation that can only judge the past by the fashions of the present will someday be judged the same way — and it will deserve it.
And here’s the part that ought to stop every protester in his tracks: every single person carrying a sign against Columbus is standing in a nation that exists because of the door he opened. The college that taught them to hate him, the free speech that lets them say it, the country that protects their right to protest — all of it flows through the door of 1492. They are the inheritance of the man they’re cursing.
There is no more important date in the last thousand years than 1492. Every road in modern history runs back through it.
THE LAST LINE ON THE BLACKBOARD
Now Class — we’re almost finished. But I want you to look at the blackboard one final time.
1492.
The year Spain expelled its Jews.
The year Columbus sailed west.
A sailor whose bones, five centuries later, a Spanish forensic team would call SEPHARDIC.
A voyage carrying an interpreter who spoke HEBREW.
A captain sailing by the numbers of a man from TYRE — the very city that once supplied Solomon’s sailors.
An Admiral who believed he had found OPHIR.
A man who told the King and Queen that Isaiah — not his maps — got him there.
Now open Genesis 46.
Jacob is old. The famine is on. Joseph has been found alive — ruling in Egypt — and the whole house of Israel is about to move. And before Jacob takes a step, he does something specific:
“And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen.” — Genesis 46:28
Write it down. JUDAH WENT FIRST.
Not to stay. Not to rule. To direct the face — to find the road to Joseph’s land so the rest of the house could follow.
Now look at the blackboard again. A son of Judah sails out of Spain in the very summer his brethren are driven out, goes on ahead across the waters, and finds the land. And within a little more than a century, who comes pouring through that door? The sons of Joseph. Ephraim to the Commonwealth. Manasseh to America — the great single nation, exactly as Jacob blessed it (Genesis 48:19).
Judah went ahead to direct the face. Joseph came behind to possess the land.
Same pattern. Same order. Same Author.
And YAHWEH had already promised He would do it:
“Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more.” — 2 Samuel 7:10
A place APPOINTED. Hidden behind an ocean. Held in reserve until a son of Israel came looking for it.
So I am asking you a question that deserves more than a casual answer. Is all of that a coincidence — or is it a PATTERN, written into the promises to Israel thousands of years before a single sail was raised?
And why did a man sailing with a mistaken picture of the earth arrive at the threshold of a world that would forever alter history?
Remember what we learned.
THE MAP WAS WRONG.
The distance to Asia had been badly miscalculated.
BUT THE LAND WAS REAL.
The voyage was real. The consequences were real. And the Admiral himself believed the hand of YAHWEH had directed his journey.
So the most important question is not whether Columbus understood where he was going. It is whether YAHWEH can accomplish His purposes through a man who does not fully understand where he is being led.
He can. He always has.
Solomon gave us the principle:
“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” — Proverbs 16:9
MAN DREW THE MAP.
COLUMBUS SAILED THE COURSE.
BUT WHO DIRECTED THE STEPS?
That, Class, is the question I want you to carry home this Columbus Day.
Because the most extraordinary thing about history is rarely what men intended to accomplish. It is what YAHWEH accomplished in spite of what they intended.
And Now You Know… THE BEST of the Story.
CLASS DISMISSED!!!!
HOMEWORK
Say the name. Columbus Day — out loud, at work, at school, at the dinner table.
Teach your children the whole story. The expulsion, the Hebrew interpreter, the map of Tyre, Solomon’s Ophir, Isaiah’s isles — and the flaws, too.
Check the receipts. Read Genesis 46:28, 1 Kings 9 and 10, and Isaiah 60:9. Look up the Seville DNA findings, Marinus of Tyre, and the Admiral’s Book of Prophecies. Then make up your own mind.
And when Thanksgiving comes, and your liberal brother-in-law starts in on “stolen land” over the sweet potatoes — you’ll be ready.
