Folks — the 2028 race just changed. And most of America hasn’t noticed yet.
Saturday night, at a CBS News town hall in Michigan, Vice President JD Vance was asked whether there’s a chance he won’t run for President in 2028.
His answer:
“Of course there’s a chance.”
Then he told the country why. Four little children at home. And a wife who, in his words, “has never loved politics. She loves public service.”
Now — I respect that. A man who puts his family ahead of his ambition is a man worth respecting.
He didn’t withdraw. He didn’t surrender. But for the first time, the heir apparent admitted out loud that 2028 is NOT INEVITABLE.
And the moment those words left the Vice President’s mouth, every pundit in Washington started the same parlor game:
WHO’S NEXT?
And the first name on their lips was the same one.
MARCO RUBIO.
I LOVE MARCO RUBIO
Let me say this plainly, so nobody misunderstands me.
I like Marco Rubio. I admire Marco Rubio. As Secretary of State he has been sharp, tough, and loyal — a man who took the America First agenda to the capitals of the world and didn’t flinch.
Would he make a formidable candidate? YES.
Would he probably make a great President? YES.
BUT HE CANNOT BE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.
I’ve been teaching this for years. I wrote about it right here on TOTO FREE PRESS in February. And now that Vance has cracked the door, I’m going to teach it again — because as the 2028 field takes shape, a lot of good conservatives are going to pour their money and their hearts into a candidate the Constitution shuts out.
Take out a pencil, Class.
THE THREE WORDS THEY SKIP
Open your Constitution to Article II.
To be a Senator, you must be a citizen. To be a Representative, you must be a citizen. To be a judge, a Cabinet secretary, a general — a citizen will do.
But to be President, the Founders wrote three different words:
NATURAL BORN CITIZEN.
Write it down. They didn’t write it by accident.
In July 1787, John Jay — who would become the first Chief Justice of the United States — wrote to George Washington, the man presiding over the Convention. He urged a “strong check” against foreigners in the administration of the national government, and asked that the Commander in Chief be given only to a natural born citizen.
The Founders did exactly that. And then they did something that tells you everything.
They exempted THEMSELVES.
The Constitution says no person except a natural born citizen — “or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution” — shall be eligible. Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison — they were born British subjects. They needed a grandfather clause to qualify for the office they created.
If “citizen” and “natural born citizen” meant the same thing, they wouldn’t have needed it.
So what did “natural born” mean to the men who wrote it?
Look at what the very first Congress did — many of the same men, three years later. The Naturalization Act of 1790 declared that the children of American citizens born overseas “shall be considered as natural born citizens.”
Write it down. The Founders’ own Congress tied “natural born” to the PARENT — not the PLACE. A child born in London or Lisbon was natural born because his father was an American.
Five years later, Congress rewrote the law and dropped the phrase. The citizenship stayed — the label went quiet. But the Founders had already told us what they meant by it.
THE PRESIDENCY ISN’T ONLY ABOUT WHERE YOU WERE BORN. IT’S ABOUT WHOSE YOU ARE.
That’s what I call the BLOODRIGHT.
THE FACTS ABOUT MARCO
Now here are the facts — and they are not in dispute.
Marco Rubio was born in Miami on May 28, 1971.
His parents came from Cuba in 1956. They worked hard. They built a life. They loved this country.
But they did not become American citizens until 1975.
Write that down.
FOUR YEARS AFTER MARCO WAS BORN.
On the day Marco Rubio came into this world, neither his mother nor his father was a citizen of the United States. He was born ON American soil — but not to an American parent.
Now — some of my friends go further than I do. They follow the old Swiss writer Vattel, who said BOTH parents must be citizens. I don’t go that far. My test is the gentler one: at least ONE citizen parent at the moment of birth.
Here’s the point, Class:
UNDER THE STRICT TEST OR THE GENTLE TEST — MARCO RUBIO FAILS BOTH.
THE TWIST THE PUNDITS WILL HATE
And now — here’s where the critics will choke on their coffee.
Remember Ted Cruz? The same Ted Cruz the Vice President just said is “running for president” right now?
Ted Cruz was born in Calgary, Canada.
And under my test, Ted Cruz IS ELIGIBLE.
Why? Because his mother was born in Delaware. She was an American citizen the day he was born. And from the very first naturalization law Congress ever passed in 1790 — and from English law centuries before that — the child of a citizen carried that citizenship by BLOOD, wherever he was born.
So there it is:
THE MAN BORN IN CANADA PASSES. THE MAN BORN IN MIAMI DOES NOT.
Do you see it?
This isn’t about Cuba. It isn’t about Hispanics. It isn’t about who I like and who I don’t. I like Rubio more than I like Cruz.
IT’S ABOUT THE BLOODRIGHT. And the Constitution doesn’t care about my feelings — or yours.
Now the establishment will tell you the Supreme Court settled all of this in 1898, in United States v. Wong Kim Ark. Read the case. Wong Kim Ark wasn’t running for anything. The Court decided whether he was a citizen under the Fourteenth Amendment. Whether a man born like him could be President under Article II was never the question in front of it.
And that question has never been answered by the Supreme Court.
If Marco Rubio is ever elected, I’ve already promised to take that question to court.
Better to settle it NOW, in the primaries, than to put the party’s nominee — and the country — through a constitutional crisis in 2029.
SO WHO’S NEXT? WATCH DESANTIS!!!!
Now for the answer to the question everybody is asking.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON RON DESANTIS.
Yes. I know.
He got out of his lane in 2024. He took on Donald Trump. And he got his tail handed to him. Trump took Iowa with 51 percent. DeSantis was a distant second — and six days later he was out of the race and endorsing the man he’d been running against.
That was the faux pas. And it was a big one.
But watch what happened next.
DeSantis went back to Florida and went to work FOR the America First agenda. He ordered state law enforcement to work hand in hand with ICE. He built the detention center the media calls Alligator Alcatraz in the Everglades. He pushed a new congressional map through the legislature that could hand Republicans more House seats. He helped land the waterfront property for the Trump presidential library.
And Donald Trump noticed. The President’s been out on the golf course with him. The reports say Trump told associates the governor has “delivered” for him in Florida.
Donald Trump forgave him.
And when Donald Trump forgives a man, the rest of the party usually follows.
CUT FROM THE SAME CLOTH
Now let me show you why I say Ron DeSantis is truly in the vein of Donald Trump.
Before he was ever a rival, he was a Trump man. In 2018 he was a congressman most of Florida had never heard of. Donald Trump endorsed him — and he won the governor’s mansion by about 32,000 votes out of more than eight million.
Write it down. DONALD TRUMP PUT HIM THERE.
Now lay their records side by side.
TRUMP BUILT THE WALL. DESANTIS BUILT ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ. He signed one of the toughest immigration laws in America — E-Verify for larger employers, penalties for smuggling illegal aliens. He got every one of Florida’s sixty-seven sheriffs working with ICE. And in 2022 he flew illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, and the sanctuary crowd found out in one afternoon what border towns live with every day.
TRUMP WANTED AMERICA OPEN. DESANTIS OPENED FLORIDA. In September 2020, while blue-state governors kept their citizens locked in their homes, he lifted the state’s restrictions on restaurants and businesses. Then he banned vaccine passports and protected Florida workers from vaccine mandates.
TRUMP TOOK ON THE WOKE. DESANTIS OUTLAWED IT. The Stop WOKE Act. Parental rights in the classroom. No more DEI spending at state universities. And when Disney decided to lecture Florida parents, he took on the Mouse — and the Mouse blinked.
TRUMP DEFENDS THE SECOND AMENDMENT. DESANTIS SIGNED CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY.
TRUMP CHAMPIONS SCHOOL CHOICE. DESANTIS DELIVERED IT TO EVERY CHILD IN FLORIDA.
TRUMP CREATED DOGE. DESANTIS BROUGHT DOGE TO FLORIDA.
TRUMP FIGHTS FOR ELECTION INTEGRITY. DESANTIS BUILT A STATE OFFICE TO PROSECUTE ELECTION CRIMES.
Same philosophy. Same enemies. Same playbook.
AMERICA FIRST.
And here’s what the pundits won’t tell you. On the few issues where these two men have parted ways, DeSantis has usually been standing to Trump’s RIGHT — signing Florida’s heartbeat law, which Trump called too harsh, and moving to keep foreign H-1B workers out of Florida’s university jobs.
The only real daylight between Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis was the 2024 primary.
AND THAT DOOR IS CLOSED.
THE MAN WHO TURNED FLORIDA RED
And if you want to know whether the voters buy it — ask Florida.
Remember: Florida used to be THE swing state. Bush v. Gore. Hanging chads. Elections decided by a few hundred votes.
In 2018, DeSantis won by less than half a percentage point.
Four years later, Florida had seen him govern through hurricanes, a pandemic, and the media’s daily hatred.
And in 2022, Florida re-elected him by NINETEEN POINTS — the biggest landslide in a Florida governor’s race in forty years. He carried 62 of 67 counties. He carried MIAMI-DADE — the first Republican candidate for governor to win it in twenty years. He flipped Palm Beach. He flipped Jacksonville. He flipped Tampa.
Look at the voter rolls. In 2020, Democrats outnumbered Republicans in Florida by nearly 100,000. Today Republicans lead by more than 1.5 MILLION.
And Americans voted with their moving vans. In 2022, Florida was the fastest-growing state in the nation.
Then, in 2024, Donald Trump carried Florida by thirteen points — and carried Miami-Dade, the first Republican presidential candidate to win it since 1988 — on ground Ron DeSantis had plowed two years earlier.
And eight years in — after hurricanes, a pandemic, and a presidential campaign — half of Florida still says he’s doing a good job.
They call it the FREE STATE OF FLORIDA. Ron DeSantis is the man who made it free.
Now look at the calendar, Class. DeSantis’s last term as governor ends in January 2027 — just as the 2028 race starts in earnest. He will be a free man, with a record to run on, a national donor network he can call back, and the President’s goodwill in his pocket.
A fighter. A man who doesn’t bow to the press. A man who governs the way he campaigns.
And here’s what makes him dangerous to the rest of the field: he doesn’t have to invent an America First résumé. He already has one. He’s fought the battles. He’s governed the third-largest state in the Union. He’s built a national organization. And he survived a presidential defeat. The question is no longer whether Ron DeSantis can govern. The question is whether Republican voters will give him a second hearing.
Right now, the early polls have Vance on top, Rubio second, and DeSantis in single digits.
Good. That’s exactly where I want my pick — before the crowd shows up.
And one more thing, Class.
Ron DeSantis was born in Jacksonville, Florida, to American parents.
HE PASSES THE BLOODRIGHT TEST.
